Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has accused past administrations in the state of diverting funds meant for developmental projects for election campaigns.
This, Okrocha said, had retarded grassroots’ development.
The governor, who spoke while commissioning the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, Ultra-Modern Cottage Health Centre at Umuonyeukwu community, in the Ikeduru Local Government Area, said the state had, in collaboration with the Federal Government, under the MDGs 2011 Conditional Grant Scheme, CGS,
completed 60 projects in various communities across the state.
He said the projects, which would soon be commissioned, were made possible by the effective and judicious utilisation of public funds.
The governor said this was in line with the spirit of his Rescue Mission Agenda, designed to positively touch the lives of the masses, especially those at the grassroots.
Okorocha, however, assured that his administration would not only guard against diversion of public funds, but would also continue to meet its counterpart funding for the realisation of the MDGs.
The governor, who spoke through his deputy, Prince Eze Madumere, promised that his administration would continue to demonstrate utmost transparency, accountability and probity in the management of public funds.
He urged the communities to take ownership and maintenance of the facility saying, “this project would not have come to fruition without government’s efforts in fighting corruption”.
Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to the governor on MDGs, Mrs. Mma Nzeribe Michaels, had disclosed that the government had built 40 primary health care centres, awaiting commissioning.
Michaels said the centres would provide relief for pregnant mothers while adding impetus to immunisation exercise against the six child-killer diseases.
Also, the Secretary of the Community Government Council, CGC, in the area, Mr. Emma K. C. Ucheson, who spoke on behalf of the people, said the project had brought about transformation, growth, progress and development.
Ucheson, who also praised Okorocha for setting up the CGC, appealed for the fencing of the project commissioned and the installation of a befitting overhead tanks and boreholes for its use.
